We have all heard the word millennial being used almost daily, but for those that are unsure of the meaning – A millennial refers to people born between 1980-2000 (or there about). They are the most studied generation, resulting in unique insights into their behaviour, attitude and learning preferences. Millennials have been characterised in a number of different ways. On the positive side, they are generally regarded as being more open-minded, confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and receptive to new ideas and ways of living.
Millennials have also been observed in negative ways. They have been described as lazy, narcissistic and have unrealistic expectations of working life, in all making it hard for them to adapt to the real world. Often nurtured and pampered by parents who didn’t want to repeat the same mistakes of the previous generation.
Here are a few tips that may help the typical millennial when entering the workplace:
–Execution is the key
Just because you have a “promising” CV doesn’t mean you will be rewarded for just showing up for work, you need to execute and deliver. To be the best you need to work hard.
-Don’t expect special treatment
You are paid to do the job and be at work. You are worthy of working-but not owed anything other than what they tell you on paper.
-Your youth doesn’t make you smarter
Being young of age doesn’t mean you know more about what is taking place in the now, with technology, social media, and trends. Knowledge is gained by experience which comes with time. The more experienced employee is there for a reason, use the opportunity for them to become a mentor, give advice and guide you.
-Be a team -player
Show management that you are able to work with other co workers, and let them take the credit sometimes, offer to do tasks that others don’t want to.
–Accept feedback graciously
Be open to constructive feedback, don’t take it personally.
-Maintain a positive attitude
Be positive, think positive. Leave your troubles at home. Being a likable person can go a long way.
-Don’t look at your cell phone or Facebook every 5 minutes
Management will definitely not appreciate your lack of concentration
By implementing the above actions, the transition for the typical millennial may be smooth and a happy experience.
